Blanket ranges – why skin is not a one size fits all scenario

It’s not just over the counter (OTC) brands, but medical grade (MG) ones too that create these “kits”; however they are problematic and let us explain why.

Education and Care

When we say “blanket” ranges we are talking about products that claim a certain line are for a specific condition and we mainly see “Acne” ranges; think Proactive, Clearasil & Dermalogica to name a few. It’s not just over the counter (OTC) brands, but medical grade (MG) ones too that create these “kits”; however they are problematic and let us explain why.

Firstly, skin is not a one size fits all scenario. Those who suffer with acne may have other conditions as well, for example rosacea, and most ingredients designed to combat acne will be too harsh for skin sensitivities. This can cause other knock on effect issues and damage to the skin which can take weeks, even months to rectify.

Also, many OTC ranges are made with ingredients designed to strip the skin of oil. This in turn causes the skin to create more oil and actually exasperates the issue. MG ranges will have quality active and effective ingredients but they will be of a higher strength and a smaller molecular structure (and as above) could create damage to sensitive skin.

Finally, most people misdiagnose their own skin! Many who come to us complaining of acne, actually have mild hormonal congestion, or the odd break out; they have often created other skin issues such as a damaged skin barrier or dryness and even atopic dermatitis through this mis-diagnosis. Many don’t even know they have rosacea and are shocked that they are making the inflammation worse by using strong products.

When treating any condition, a skin specialist will not only look at the main complaint/condition, but all factors and secondary issues. This will impact what active ingredients are chosen; combinations of supporting ingredients and amounts/frequency to be used.

So when somebody says “this is our sensitive range” or “this is our acne system”, run a mile. Either it will give substandard results or worse, damage your skin.

If you want the best results whilst maintaining healthy skin, you need to see a genuine specialist who can guide you in the right direction.

*please remember that whilst certain ingredients are known to treat or benefit certain conditions; strength, percentage, application and molecular structure all need to be taken into account!
