Melasma is a common skin problem which causes brown to grey-brown patches, usually on the face. Most people get it on their cheeks, bridge of their nose, forehead, chin, and above their upper lip. It also can appear on other parts of the body that get lots of sun, such as the forearms and neck.
One of the most common treatments for melasma is sun protection. This means wearing sunscreen every day and reapplying the sunscreen every 2 hours. We also recommend wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses when you are outside. Sunscreen alone may not give you the protection you need.
The exact cause of Melasma is not known, but it is thought to be because of pigment-producing cells in the skin (melanocytes) producing too much pigment (melanin).
Women are far more likely than men to get melasma and it is so common during pregnancy that melasma is sometimes called “the mask of pregnancy.” Hormones seem to trigger melasma, including pregnancy and using hormonal drugs such as birth control pills and hormone replacement.
Rarely, other medical problems that affect hormones (such as thyroid problems) may cause melasma, as well as some other medications, such as anti-epileptics.
Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun and the use of sun-beds or phototherapy can trigger melasma or make it worse.
Melasma treatments fall into the following categories and can be used together:
• Avoiding known triggers, such as birth control pills and hormone therapy.
• Avoiding the sun and using SPF 50+.
• Skin lightening creams.
• Procedures such as chemical peels, microneedling and laser therapy.
* Plasma Treatments
